When assigned to shoot portraits for British or French newspapers, Magali Delporte uses her own body to test framing and lighting before the subject arrives. Alone on set, she stands in for presidents, artists, CEOs, and others—creating over 100 of these improvised self-portraits.

Now, the work has become a game of memory, blending documentation and fun. Substitute is part of a broader, playful self-portrait series in which Delporte turns the camera on herself to explore her own life—The Countdown, Greetings, and M is a Photographer among them.
